When Alexander McQueen passed away, the world lost a fashion genius, but his legacy lives on through his iconic designs. Whether it’s his unmissable skull scarf designs, or the shoe designs championed by the likes of Lady Gaga, McQueen’s influence can be seen wherever you look. Every design McQueen came out with was incredibly unique and it can be difficult to keep track of them all, but this brief guide to McQueen’s two most famous pieces of footwear should give you an idea of the great designer’s truly unforgettable talent when it came to shoes.

McQueen’s Armadillo shoes are one of his most eye-popping designs ever – inspired by the shape of the animal from which it takes its name, this shoe design actually also has a lot of similarities to a lobster claw. With 12 inch heels, these shoes had an incredibly small area for the wearer’s foot and became notorious after models at the Spring/Summer 2010 Plat Atlantis catwalk show refused to wear them over safety fears. Like most of McQueen’s catwalk shoe designs, the Armadillo shoes are extremely rare and not available to buy.

Next up are McQueen’s heelless shoes and these are exactly what they sound like. Coming in a range of heights, with the most popular being a terrifying 11 inches, the heelless shoe has no heel to speak of with its only means of supporting coming from a small wedge under the base of the foot and the wearer’s own willpower.

Alexander McQueen shoes are enduringly popular with fashion fans and when you look at the ingeniousness of their designs it’s not hard to see why.
